This guide introduces the marine life you might encounter on our tours, organized by group. Not every species appears on every tour — what you see depends on the season, the conditions and where we go that day.
Reef fish
Shallow reefs off San José del Cabo hold a colorful mix of tropical reef fish — angelfish, butterflyfish, parrotfish, wrasse and more. They are the most reliable sight on a snorkeling tour, darting among the coral and rock structure. See them on our Snorkeling Adventure.
Rays
Several species of ray live in these waters, from small stingrays on the sandy bottom to larger rays cruising the reef edges. Rays are generally calm and keep their distance, but they are a memorable sight when they glide by.
Mobula rays
Mobula rays are a seasonal highlight of the Sea of Cortez. They can gather in large numbers and are famous for breaching — launching out of the water and landing with a slap. Read our mobula ray season guide for when they are typically around.
Sea turtles
Green and olive ridley turtles are present in the region and are sometimes seen gliding over the reefs or surfacing for air. They are a quiet, gentle presence on a snorkel — and a reminder of how much life these waters support.
Dolphins
Dolphins are common in the Sea of Cortez and often ride the bow wake of our boats. Several species are present, and playful pods can turn up at almost any time of year.
Whales
From December through April, humpback and gray whales migrate to the warm waters off Baja California Sur. Humpbacks are the species most often seen on our tours, with breaches, tail slaps and the chance to hear their song on the hydrophone. See our whale watching season guide and the Whale Watching tour.
Seasonal pelagic wildlife
Beyond the reef, the open Sea of Cortez holds seasonal pelagic wildlife — sharks, tuna, dorado and other open-water species that move through with the currents and water temperature. Our Blue Water Snorkeling goes beyond the reef in search of this wider mix of marine life.
Seasonality
Marine life in the Sea of Cortez is seasonal. Whales are a winter phenomenon; mobula rays and mantas are more of a warm-water sight; reef fish are present much of the year. The mix on any given day depends on the water temperature, the currents and where we go.
Not every species can be seen on every tour. What you encounter depends on the season, the conditions and the route on the day — wildlife is wild, and no sighting is guaranteed.
