HISTORY & CULTURE
The waʻa: a thousand-year-old vessel of the Pacific
Polynesian outrigger canoes are among the oldest ocean vessels in human history. Thousands of years ago, the navigators of the Pacific used them to settle the most remote islands on Earth, guided by the stars, the swells and the flight of birds.
The Hawaiian outrigger canoe, known as the waʻa, evolved from this tradition. Its outrigger (ama) provides stability in open water, allowing small crews to travel long distances across the Pacific with confidence.
More than a boat, the waʻa is a symbol of teamwork: every paddler must move in unison, in rhythm, for the canoe to glide forward. It teaches respect for the ocean, cooperation and the value of moving together.
On this experience you will learn the basics of that tradition — the paddle stroke, the call of the guide, the coordination of the crew — and connect with the sea the way the first voyagers did.
